Ana Milosavljevic

Biography

Ana Milosavljevic is an acclaimed composer and violinist specializing in cutting-edge contemporary music influenced by disparate genres including traditional Balkan music, electronica, rock, jazz, classical, pop, hip-hop, and improvisation. Recent work features her red Viper electric violin. A multi-talented Serbian native and Manhattan-based artist, ANA has stunned audiences at venues from the legendary Carnegie Hall and Kennedy Center to hip "downtown" NYC venues - Le Poisson Rouge, The Stone, Cornelia Street Café and all points in between.

ANA composes music for film, dance, theater, and instrumental concert music, and fosters numerous multimedia collaborations. As a composer, her music has premiered at Carnegie Hall, Off-Broadway, Le Poisson Rouge; has been featured in choreography by Takehiro Ueyama (TAKE Dance); and performed by Grammy Award-winning Native American flutist Robert Mirabal and string quartet ETHEL (with whom she's also appeared as a guest violinist in concerts nationally and internationally). ANA's current commissions include composing the music for Luci in the Sky, an art film project by visual artist Vittoria Chierici.

ANA has performed solo recitals at such renown concert halls as Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center's Rose Studio, Belgrade Philharmonic Hall, Kolarac Concert Hall, The TimesCenter, as well as hip "downtown" NYC clubs including Le Poisson Rouge, Cornelia Street Café, and The Stone, and has also appeared at major festivals including Spoleto in Italy, Aspen, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, 2008 Beijing International Congress on Women in Music in China, ASCAP's Thru the Walls showcase series, and Composers Collaborative's Serial Underground.

One of New York's most in-demand violinists, ANA has premiered and recorded works — some written especially for her — by world-renowned composers. She has also performed with Thomas Dolby, and collaborated with singer/songwriter Joy Askew, with whom she appeared in the Art for Animals concert at Club Helsinki Hudson featuring headliner Laurie Anderson.

ANA has received awards from Artists International Presentations, Inc., New York Women Composers, Inc., ASCAPLUS Award, the Alice M. Ditson Fund of Columbia University, Soros Fund, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She has been featured on WNYC and WQXR / Q2 radio stations, the Voice of America international telecasts, New York's MNN Public TV broadcasts, and Serbian radio and television. She can be heard on the Innova, Albany, Chandos, Pitch, and Neos Classics labels.

ANA's new album Reflections was released on Innova Recordings in October 2010.

Luci in the Sky

Luci in the Sky (2012), art film: concept by Vittoria Chierici, original music composed and

performed by ANA Milosavljevic, film edited by Yuko Takebe

ANA Milosavljevic, Viper electric violin, and violin

Produced by Vittoria Chierici

The project Luci in the Sky  - (luci, in Italian means lights), started in 2007, when visual artist Vittoria Chierici met the director of an international group of sky watchers who were recording special meteor phenomena. The director of the program gave her some of these very short scenes.  Most of them were frames that were discarded because they were scientifically useless.

Since then, Vittoria has been interviewing different composers and film editors in order to find collaborators for this new art film project.  In the summer of 2011, she gave ANA Milosavljevic the commission, choosing her to be both composer and performer of the original music for Luci in the Sky.

The film is based on tiny luminous points of light moving the sky background in nocturnal variations which contrast with close ups of night creatures who came incautamente near the camera lens. The contrast between a distant, unpredictable world and the closer, more human attempts of flying away are the content cues that filmmaker Yuko Takebe had to consider when editing this film as a multi – projection video.

The Red Viper Project

The Red Viper Project is ANA Milosavljevic’s newly launched electrifying adventure focusing on music written for her 6-string fretted red Viper electric violin, electronic sound, and additional instrumentation including classical (acoustic) violin, drums/percussion, piano, and voice. Currently, this project is in the form of a one-woman show, and the program features works written by ANA as well as works written for her by composers Randall Woolf, Joseph C. Phillips Jr., DJ Damian, and music by Jacob TV.

This ongoing Red Viper Project presents a combination of various stylistic influences showcasing a rich sound palette, and blending classical and traditional Balkan music with some of the more popular musical influences such as electronica, rock, pop, jazz, and improvisation, an important and signature element of ANA’s work.  It joyously showcases ANA’s own compositions as well as her collaborations with various musicians, songwriters, producers, filmmakers, dancers, DJs, visual artists, actors, and theatre directors.
